Hans Jacob Koger was born in Auggen, Baden in 1710. His parents, Josias Koger and Anna Lowenberger had his birth recorded in the Church register there. He came to America the first time arriving the 24th day of May 1728 in Philadelphia on the ship Mortonhouse with his bother Michael. Hans returned home and made a second trip arriving in Philadelphia on the 17th day of August 1732 o the ship Pink along with his brother Nicholas. Whit his brother, Hans stayed in Pennsylvania a short time where they both married and started families. They then traveled to Virginia where we obtained land and began to set up their homes. Nicholas was killed by Indians as he built his home and left several orphaned children, some of which Hans took in and raised as his own. Hans' family settled in what was then Augusta and Orange Counties. He was civic minded and helped build roads and served as constable for a while. He was a typical German and got into altercations according to court records in several Virginia counties where he lived. Hans had a grist mill on one of the pieces of land he owned on the North Creek of Mayo River in Halifax County.. In 1782 he deeded his home place in Henry County to his son Henry and his heirs.
