Home Satterfield Ancestors

Lavina Thompson was born 28 January 1763 to Robert and Ann Thompson. She married Joseph Erwin 17 January 1782 in Guilford County, North Carolina. The couple had eight children together.  They were all born in Guilford County before the family moved Davidson County, Tennessee.  They were John, Jane, Leodocia, Thompson, Elizabeth, Nancy, Joseph, and Isaac.

Joseph and Lavina had an interesting and complicated life together.  He was a brilliant entrepreneur and that caused the couple to move around in the first twenty-five years of married life.  They finally settled in Louisiana, moving there before state hood.  Their plantation home place was near the Mississippi for easy travel and movement of crop produce that they had many slaves working to support their lifestyle and themselves.  When they first moved to Louisiana Lavina left all her children behind in Nashville, Tennessee.  It was wild and unsettled, but they carved a life out and it was a good one. There were extreme highs and lows as they tried different crops  Several of their children died there as young adults.  A mother should not out live her children.

Joseph died in 1829 leaving her with failed crops and some debt.  She had her sons-in-laws help in rebuilding and paying off the debt.  They did lose some of the land, but not all of it!

She died 13 February 1836 leaving behind a legacy of heritage and land. The land, the children fought over in court. (1,2,3,4)
