James Lawrence Satterfield was born 25 March 1814 in Chowan County, North Carolina to James and Frances Satterfield. His dad died when he was little and his mom married again. She made sure he got a good education. James went on to college and became a doctor. He married first Elizabeth Skinner 1 September 1836 in Chowan County, North Carolina. They had a daughter Elizabeth. His wife, Elizabeth, died before 1850, leaving me to raise their daughter alone. His mom helped some, but when she got too old to help him, James decided to leave North Carolina and headed for Louisiana where some of his cousins had moved. There he met Catherine. She was a widow, too. She had a young son and he had Elizabeth. James married her the 16th day of January in 1853 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. He purchased a large tract if land in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana on the Atchafalaya River (1,2) with the help of Catherine's cousin Isaiah Norwood in 1854. Catherine and James had two children together Clara Louise and Isaiah Norwood. Catherine died when they were both small. Only Norwood out lived him. He was living with Norwood when he died 15 November 1884 in New Iberia, Iberia Parish, Louisiana.
