Zaidee Bell Baker was born on the 18th day of September in the year 1873 in the heart of Texas, Gonzales County to James Alexander Baker and Laura Lee Squires. Her birth was recorded in the family bible. When she was almost 18 she married Joseph Perry Ford in January of 1891. He gave her a Colt 45 shortly after they married and taught her how to shoot it. He wanted her to protected when he was away. It was made in 1871. The family moved around Texas a bit. They lived in Gonzales and Smith Counties. They had 6 children. She out lived three of them and her husband, whom she lost in 1940. The gun stayed with her until she died at the age of 100 and almost 3. She slept with it under my pillow. No one dared bother her. She was buried in Bethesda Cemetery, Smith County, Texas next to her husband one of her children.. |
