Eli Mitchell

Eli Mitchell was born in 1797 in Turkey Foot, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. His birth date he recorded in his family bible. This bible is now in the Gonzales Museum under lock and key. (1,2,3,4,5,6) His birth place was recorded in Eli's declaration to marry Elizabeth Zumwalt in what is now Gonzales County, Texas. He was married twice. The first time in Pennsylvania to Sarah Olivet Skinner. He had a son Jackson with her. Eli got 'the wunderlust' and left Pennsylvania. He wound up in Texas where he met the daughter of Adam Zumwalt, one of the original settlers of the DeWitt Colony. She and Eli filed intent to marry in 1833 saying we would make it official when the authorities arrived. That didn't happen until 1838. They had already had two children that were born to them and then die before that time. He received a 3/4 league of land for being in Texas early. That land Eli sold pieces of all his life to help support his family. Elizabeth still had much of it to dispose of and divide between their surviving children after his death in 1870. The partition of the land is recorded in Gonzales County, Texas Deed Book V pages 414-419 and also in my probate record loose papers. (1,2,3,4,5,6} Eli was buried in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery in Gonzales, Texas. There is a marker there for me as he was the delegate from Gonzales to the Convention in 1833 for the forming of the Republic of Texas. He was written about in The Texas Handbook Mitchell County, Texas is named for him and his brother Asa as they were both prominent players in the Texas Revolution.
