James Thomas Camp
Home Camp Ancestors

James Thomas Camp was the youngest child of John Hamlin Camp and Dorothy Chamberlin Jones.  His father died when he was a little over a year old, so he never knew him.  His mother, though, kept John Hamlin's image alive and James knew of his father and grandfather and all their accomplishments.  That history has been passed down to his descendants and to those of his siblings.

He married twice to Cain cousins.  His first wife, Laura, James married in 1851.  She died a short time after giving birth to a sickly son the couple named John Hamlin after James' father.  He died the same year in 1853.  He then married Mary Phila Ann Cain in 1854. They had 8 children together and moved around a bit.  The first three children were born in Cherokee Co, AL where one of his older sisters and her family had gone.  They then went to Bastrop County, Texas where the family was during the war between the states.

He was educated as a physician and didn't really practice until the Civil War, what a travesty that was, all the humanity and lives that were destroyed.  His life was never the same after the war. The couple had two more children in Texas before returning to Warren County, Tennessee where the Cain's were.  They had three more children after their move back to Tennessee.  He died before the youngest was six leaving his mother to fend for and raise him, much as James' mother did for him.
